August 2026 saw 30 helicopter incidents across 13 countries, with 31 fatalities. That makes it the busiest month of the year so far in both incidents and deaths, well above the 24 incidents and 18 fatalities recorded in August 2025.
The numbers
The United States recorded the most incidents at 12, though only three were fatal. Greece and Canada followed with three each.
Major incidents
Afghanistan Mi-17 shot down (7 killed) - August 13
A Mil Mi-17 of the Afghan Air Force came down at Nusay in the Darwaz-e Bala district, killing all seven on board. It is recorded as a hostile action loss, and the only such loss in the database this month.
Kenya EC130 crash on Mount Ololokwe (7 killed) - August 19
A Lady Lori Helicopters Eurocopter EC130B4, 5Y-GYM, struck Mount Ololokwe in northern Kenya on a charter flight, killing all seven on board. It was the deadliest civil helicopter accident of the month and remains under investigation.
Rio de Janeiro R44 crash (4 killed) - August 8
A Robinson R44 came down in Rio de Janeiro with four fatalities, on a sightseeing flight over the city. Brazil recorded only this one incident in August, but it was among the month's worst.
Sifnos Bell 206 crash (3 killed) - August 17
A Bell 206 crashed on the Greek island of Sifnos, killing three people on an air taxi flight. The investigation is ongoing.
Two midair collisions
August produced two midair collisions, an event type that averages only a handful a year worldwide.
On August 2, two McDermott Aviation Bell 214STs collided while working the Psatha wildfire in Greece. Two crew were killed. Under our convention each airframe is recorded separately, so the accident appears as two entries, one fatal and one with serious injuries.
On August 19, a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407GX, N873ST, was struck by a light aircraft over Carlisle Airport. The pilot of the other aircraft was killed and the helicopter crew survived.
Firefighting and utility work
Firefighting again accounted for some of the month's heaviest losses. Beyond the Psatha collision, a Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe, N793HT, crashed on August 7 near Richfield, Utah, while working a fire, killing both crew.
Wire strikes claimed two lives when a Magni M16 gyroplane hit cables near Antrona Schieranco in northern Italy on August 26.
Gyroplanes
Four of the month's incidents involved gyroplanes: the fatal Magni M16 wire strike in Italy, a Magni M24C Orion at Bembridge in the UK, and two AutoGyro Cavalons in the United States, at Conroe in Texas and Long Island MacArthur in New York. Only the Italian accident caused injuries.
Military operations
Military aircraft featured in six incidents. Besides the Afghan Mi-17, a US Army AH-64 Apache crashed near Salado, Texas, on August 12, killing both crew. A 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment MH-60M came down on Thorodin Mountain in Colorado on August 25 with serious injuries but no deaths, and both the Mexican Navy and the Mexican Air Force lost aircraft in separate accidents with survivors.
Light helicopter training
Robinson types accounted for eight incidents, most of them minor training or private accidents in the United States and Italy with no injuries. That pattern is consistent across the database: the R22 and R44 appear more often than any other type, reflecting how many of them are flying rather than any particular fragility.
Looking back
August was worse than the same month last year on both counts, 30 incidents against 24, and 31 deaths against 18. Some of that is better coverage on our side, since records are added continuously, and some of it is a genuinely severe fire season in Greece and the western United States.
