Bell-Boeing MV-22B Osprey crash near near the Draa river, Tan Tan, Guelmim-Oued Noun, Morocco

The MV-22B of VMM-261 crashed near Tan-Tan in southern Morocco during Exercise African Lion, killing two of the four on board, crew chiefs Cpl Robby A. Reyes and Cpl Derek A. Kerns. The Marine Corps investigation found that the copilot at the controls flew a 180 degree hover turn that left the aircraft with a tailwind of 15 to 27 knots, lowered the nacelles below the angle permitted for low speed flight, and did not counter the resulting pitch down tendency. The investigation described a series of imprecise decisions and actions in the cockpit, noted that the copilot did not have a clear understanding of the true wind speed, and recommended no administrative or disciplinary action against either pilot.
