AutoGyro MTOsport crash near 20 km east of Kilpisjarvi, Enontekio, Lapland, Finland
The gyroplane was flying from Kautokeino in Norway towards Salangen, routeing directly across Finland, when it met marginal weather near Kilpisjarvi. The commander neither turned back nor landed but altered heading over higher mountain terrain. Cumulonimbus activity in the area produced strong local winds and turbulence. The Accident Investigation Board Norway found it likely that the gyroplane lost airspeed while affected by turbulence and the commander lost directional control, after which the aircraft began to rotate, drifted off the mountain plateau and fell in rocky terrain. The passenger climbed to higher ground to call for help on a mobile phone. The commander was killed. The board concluded that flight safety had not been sufficiently prioritised in the planning and execution of the flight, and that the commander's limited experience, the weather and the performance of the aircraft all contributed.
