Summary
A Peruvian Air Force Mil Mi-17 helicopter crashed into terrain during a flood rescue mission in Chala District, Department of Arequipa. All 15 on board were killed including four crew members: Major Sergio Danner Paucar Centurion, First Lieutenant Luis Fernando Huertas Carcamo, and two petty officers, plus 11 passengers. The aircraft was operating a search and rescue mission after heavy rainfall caused major flooding in the Arequipa and Ica regions, killing two civilians and affecting 5,500 homes. A nationwide state of emergency had been declared. The helicopter crashed in the mountainous coastal desert terrain of southern Peru.
