Airbus Helicopters H125 crash near Cerezo de Mohernando, Guadalajara, Castile-La Mancha, Spain

serious2022-07-25
Summary

During a firefighting operation at Cerezo de Mohernando the H125 struck high-voltage cables with its main rotor blades and descended rapidly to the ground, where a post-impact fire destroyed it. The investigation found the cause was low-altitude flight in an environment of reduced operational safety, the collision resulting from the pilot's inadvertent failure to comply with the safety rules of the water drop procedure. The rotor strike caused an unrecoverable loss of power, forcing an emergency landing on a steep slope; the aircraft overturned on impact, trapping the pilot, and caught fire. Smoke from the fire and the cables being camouflaged against the surroundings were identified as contributing factors. The pilot suffered minor injuries. Final report A-038/2022.
