Mil Mi-17 crash near Naltar Valley, Pakistan

A Pakistan Army Mil Mi-17 helicopter crash-landed on an empty school building in Naltar Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, while carrying diplomats from 37 countries on a three-day tour. The helicopter was one of three in a convoy; the other two landed safely. Seven people were killed: Norwegian Ambassador Leif Larsen, Philippines Ambassador Domingo Lucenario Jr, the wives of the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors, two Army pilots (Major Altamash and Major Faisal), and a crew member. Eleven others were injured including Dutch and Polish ambassadors. The helicopter caught fire on impact. The TTP claimed responsibility saying they targeted PM Nawaz Sharif with a SAM-7 missile, but the military ruled out terrorism and cited a technical fault during landing. It was the most serious aviation accident involving diplomats since the 1988 death of President Zia ul-Haq.
