fatal2025-11-101 fatality
Summary
The R22 was flying dew control over berry fields at Roodegrond farm near Patensie, low and facing the morning sun, when its main rotor mast struck a 1,000 volt overhead power line spanning the flight path. The helicopter descended uncontrolled and crashed among the citrus rows, and was destroyed. The pilot, a cookbook author and television cook, was killed. The Civil Aviation Authority cited the reduced visual conspicuity of the power lines and inadequate aerial inspection as contributing factors.
