Incident report
Bell UH-1H Iroquois crash near Vlakkenberg, Hout Bay, Western Cape, South Africa
minor2026-03-25
Summary
The Kishugu Aviation UH-1H was flying water drops on a fire at Vlakkenberg above Hout Bay. After two completed Bambi bucket drops, the helicopter's starboard main rotor blades struck a rocky outcrop while on approach to the third. It descended vertically, hit the mountainside and rolled onto its port side. The pilot climbed out unaided and was met by paramedics on his way down the mountain, with minor injuries. The Civil Aviation Authority attributed the accident to a loss of situational awareness while flying close to the mountain, with operational pressure and target fixation as contributing factors.
