Bell UH-1H crash near Kalymnos, South Aegean, Greece
The helicopter was flying a surveillance mission in the area of the 80th Higher Command of National Guard Battalions, based on Kos, when it came down hard on the helipad of the Defence Administration of Kalymnos at about 10:25. Early reports put the drop at four to five metres. A fire started after the landing and was quickly put out by a fire brigade unit. All six aboard were reported in good health and taken to the Kalymnos health centre as a precaution; among them was Brigadier General Grigoris Garoufalias, commander of the 80th Higher Command. The aircraft was a UH-1H of the 1st Army Aviation Brigade. The Hellenic Army General Staff said the causes and circumstances are being investigated. Four details differ from the aggregator record: it gives the operator as the Hellenic Air Force, where the announcement came from the Army General Staff and the aircraft belongs to Army Aviation; it gives the type only as Huey, where the announcement gives UH-1H; it places the landing at Kalymnos Airport rather than the Defence Administration helipad; and it gives the time as 10:35 against the official 10:25. Coordinates are approximate to Kalymnos.
