Bell 206 crash near Sifnos, Greece

fatal2026-08-173 fatalities
Summary

A Bell 206 private helicopter crashed in the Tholos neighbourhood of Sifnos, a popular Cyclades tourist island, shortly after 6pm local time while approaching the island helipad. All three on board were killed: the Greek pilot and two British passengers who were newlyweds on their honeymoon. Viral video footage showed the helicopter spinning multiple times before losing control and crashing into an arid hillside, erupting into a fireball. Deputy Mayor Manolis Fountoulakis said residents heard a loud, strange noise preceding the crash, "like military aircraft," suggesting a possible tail rotor failure. Two firefighters with a fire engine responded along with a rescue team dispatched from Syros aboard the Fire Department RAFNAR speedboat. It was the second fatal helicopter crash in Greece in two weeks, following the Psatha midair collision on August 2 that killed two firefighting pilots. The pilot had radioed moments earlier that he was about to land. Two of the three killed were British newlyweds on honeymoon.
