Incident report
Westland Whirlwind HAR.4 crash near RAF Seletar, Singapore
fatal1957-04-161 fatality
Summary
The helicopter began to vibrate violently as power was increased for take off at Seletar and started to break up. A main rotor blade detached and killed an airman on the ground, and another blade severed the tail cone. A passenger and four airmen were injured. A rotor blade had not been fitted correctly during maintenance. The one death recorded here was a person on the ground rather than an occupant, following the convention that the helicopter's record carries the full toll. The source gives the serial as both XJ412 and XJ427, and the aircraft was originally allocated XD796 before that serial went to a Sabre. The squadron was 155 Squadron.
