Incident report
Guimbal Cabri G2 crash near Lelystad, Netherlands
serious2022-03-18
Summary
A HeliCentre Guimbal Cabri G2 (PH-HCJ, manufactured 2021) on a solo training flight from Lelystad Airport entered an uncontrolled spiralling descent after the student pilot allowed airspeed to drop to zero while distracted by an incorrect ATC instruction. The helicopter climbed 600 feet unnoticed, entered rapid left rotation, and began an uncontrolled steep left spiral. The student regained control at 200 feet AGL by applying trained recovery procedures, aided by the extra altitude inadvertently gained. The Dutch Safety Board noted that an instructor in another helicopter received the same incorrect ATC instruction and immediately queried it.
