Bell 212 crash near Varzaqan, East Azerbaijan, Iran
An Iranian Air Force Bell 212 helicopter (6-9207) carrying President Ebrahim Raisi crashed near the village of Uzi in the Dizmar forest, East Azerbaijan Province, in foggy mountainous terrain. All 8 on board were killed: President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Governor-General of East Azerbaijan Malek Rahmati, representative of the Supreme Leader Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the head of the presidential security team, and three crew members. The helicopter was part of a three-aircraft convoy returning from the Giz Galasi Dam on the Azerbaijan-Iran border to Tabriz. The other two helicopters landed safely. The wreckage was located after an extensive overnight search in dense fog. It was the highest-profile helicopter crash since the 2015 Naltar Valley crash that killed two ambassadors.
