minor1999-03-02
Summary

A Heliportugal R44 returning from television news work passed within 1,000 metres of the main lobe of a high energy HF broadcasting antenna near Sines at 1,300 ft. The pilot reported strong interference on the intercom and radios, then low rotor RPM and clutch warnings, and the engine dropped to idle. He autorotated, and at about 200 ft the engine responded abruptly and overspeeded the rotor. He landed safely and neither occupant was hurt. The main rotor blades were severely damaged and the governor was sent for examination for electromagnetic interference.
