Sikorsky S-65C-3 crash near She'ar Yashuv, Israel

Summary

Two Israeli Air Force CH-53 Yas'ur 2000 helicopters collided mid-air in darkness over She'ar Yashuv while ferrying troops to the security zone in southern Lebanon. The rotor of helicopter 357 struck the tail of helicopter 903. Helicopter 357 crashed immediately at She'ar Yashuv moshav, killing all 37 on board. The Ivry Commission was unable to determine a definitive cause, ruling out mechanical failure. The disaster was the deadliest in Israeli military history and a leading factor in Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.
