fatal2002-10-206 fatalities
Summary
The presidential helicopter was flying for the 2002 national polio vaccination campaign when it came down about 60 km south of Antananarivo in poor visibility and heavy cloud. All six on board were killed: Lt Col Davisa Ratsimandah, Lt Col Michel Neret Miharivelo and Lt Col Emmanuel Rakotoniaina, pilots; Lt Flavien Yamicole, mechanic; Major Solo Ratsimbazafy of the Ministry of Defence; and Dr Andre Jaonera of the Ministry of Health. The source places the site on the boundary of Toamasina province, which does not sit easily with a position 60 km south of the capital, so the location is approximate.
