Magni M16 Tandem Trainer crash near Magaliesberg range, near Silver Creek Gorge, North West, South Africa

minor2025-09-24
Summary

An instructor and a student were flying from Silver Creek Gorge to Bapsfontein when, over the Magaliesberg range, they noticed a reduced rate of climb and engaged the turbo without improvement. Assuming an engine failure, the instructor made a forced landing on the mountain about 2.3 nautical miles south-east of Silver Creek Gorge, and the aircraft came to rest on its left side with damage to the undercarriage and rotor blades. Neither was injured. The Civil Aviation Authority concluded that the aircraft had been flown at low altitude in mountainous terrain and was probably affected by downdraughts or turbulent airflow, which caused the loss of climb performance.
