Summary
Whirlwind HAS.7 XL851, coded 331 of 824 Naval Air Squadron, was in a hover when engine noise increased, possibly from a transmission failure. The helicopter moved left, lost height and ditched in the Mediterranean Sea off Malta while operating from HMS Ark Royal. Two of the three crew were injured and all were rescued by another 824 Squadron Whirlwind.
