Incident report
Airbus Helicopters EC 145 crash near Tenerife Sur-Reina Sofía Airport, Canary Islands, Spain
serious2022-03-28
Summary
The HEMS crew were returning to their base at Tenerife Sur-Reina Sofía Airport and landing on the K-3 helipad when an intense vibration developed. The captain put the helicopter down immediately. The tail rotor blades were damaged, its gearbox partially detached, and the vertical stabiliser damaged. The investigation found the crew had not adequately accounted for strong wind while positioning above the apron, compounded by the captain taking the controls with low awareness of the aircraft's instability. The helicopter overshot the obstacle-free area and its tail struck a tree. Final report A-017/2022.
