Whirlwind HAS.7 XK945 ditched in the Mediterranean Sea off Malta and sank while operating from HMS Centaur, after the engine failed in a 36 ft hover. The three crew were rescued by another Whirlwind HAS.7, XK942. The aircraft first flew on 27 September 1957 and was delivered to the Royal Navy on 7 October 1957.
