Robinson R22 crash near Barkly Region, Australia

minor2024-11-15
Summary

A Robinson R22 helicopter being used for aerial work in the Northern Territory's Barkly Region experienced a drive belt failure while cruising at approximately 300 feet. The pilot smelled burning rubber, heard a bang, and observed a sharp increase in engine RPM followed by a decay in rotor RPM. The pilot initiated an autorotation landing during which the helicopter impacted the ground with significant forward speed and rolled over. The helicopter was substantially damaged but the pilot and passenger sustained only minor injuries. The ATSB found the accident was likely the result of a drive belt failure.
