fatal2013-11-162 fatalities
Summary
A Sikorsky S-76C++ owned by LG Electronics departed Gimpo Airport at 8:46 a.m. in poor visibility to pick up senior executives including a Vice Chairman from the Jamsil heliport in Gangnam. In low cloud and fog, the helicopter struck the 24th floor of the IPARK apartment building, a 38-storey residential tower in Gangnam district. Both pilots, Captain Park In-kyu (58) and co-pilot Koh Jong-jin (37), were killed. No apartment residents were injured. The ARAIB investigation found the crew continued flight into deteriorating weather conditions despite poor visibility. About 300 firefighters and police responded. Criticism mounted against LG Electronics for pressuring pilots to fly in unsafe weather to collect executives.
