Sikorsky S-76C+ crash near Bonny, Nigeria

The helicopter was on a crew transfer flight contracted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, from Port Harcourt Nigerian Air Force Base to the Nuim Antan floating production storage and offloading vessel in block OML 123. It struck the sea less than a kilometre from the vessel. All eight on board were killed. The cockpit voice recorder shows the crew had decided to abandon the approach and climb back to Port Harcourt because of the weather, the pilot flying calling out "eight miles broken, you can't see nothing". The pilot monitoring advised that the only way to climb was to engage airspeed mode and use the collective, then remarked that "this thing is not working". An aural bank angle warning was the last data on the recorder. The aircraft carried no flight data recorder. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has published a preliminary report.
