Bell 429 crash near Abuja, Abuja, Nigeria
The helicopter had dropped a passenger at Iyamho in Edo State and returned to Abuja, where the crew carried out a quick turnaround without shutting down. While powering down at Abuja the crew heard a loud noise and the helicopter began to vibrate, developing ground resonance within seconds. The co-pilot shut the engines down and applied the rotor brakes. The helicopter drifted left towards a parked Bell 412 as the rotors slowed, stopping three feet from its touchdown point. Both crew walked away. The causal factor was a failure to tell the crew the current serviceability status of the ground handling wheel before they arrived, with the decision to hover-taxi and reposition without marshalling as contributory. The same airframe was damaged again at Bauchi in January 2022.
