Robinson R22 Beta crash near Billund Airport, Southern Denmark, Denmark

serious2009-04-03
Summary

The night training flight had gone from Billund to Herning and was returning. On approach at 1,000 feet and about a kilometre from the threshold of runway 09, the helicopter was slightly high on the PAPI and the instructor asked the student to increase the descent. As the student lowered the collective the helicopter began to shake and the engine RPM fluctuated. The instructor took control and turned toward the northern part of the runway end safety area for runway 27, knowing it was clear of obstructions. Having turned northeast at around 5 to 10 metres, he began to lower the aircraft when the engine stopped abruptly. He entered autorotation, during which the rear of the left skid struck the terrain; the helicopter rotated through 360 degrees to the left and came to rest upright on both skids. He shut off the fuel and electrical supply and both occupants evacuated. There was no fire but the helicopter was destroyed.
