serious2016-05-22
Summary
The Ecureuil was returning to Reykjavik from a sightseeing charter when it crashed near the Hengill volcano. All five occupants were injured and the helicopter was severely damaged. The Icelandic investigation board concluded that the pilot had underestimated the weather conditions in the mountains and lost full control of the aircraft. Flying close to the ground, he was unable to recover when it began to spin, and it struck the terrain. The board did not rule out wind as a contributing factor. Classified as loss of control in flight.
