serious2012-09-04
Summary
The JetRanger was substantially damaged when it struck terrain in a training area near Al Ain International Airport. The transmission separated from the fuselage and the helicopter broke into four pieces. The instructor and student were taken to hospital and released with minor injuries. The investigation found the instructor's monitoring of the developing flight condition was insufficient to plan an effective recovery; that the throttle remained retarded below the 500ft standard operating procedure requirement; and that the instructor intervened at a point where recovery was no longer possible from the intervention decision altitude.
