Incident report
Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV crash near Caobanal Airport, Guanagazapa, Escuintla, Guatemala
minor2020-07-07
Summary
The LongRanger flew from La Aurora International Airport to Caobanal Airport at Guanagazapa, Escuintla, for a series of recurrent training flights. After several emergency simulation exercises, the helicopter landed while performing an autorotation to the ground. On touching the runway, stopping and accelerating again, the pilot realised there was damage and shut down to inspect it, finding damage to the tail boom, stabilisers and the boom's axle and cover. The investigation found the probable cause was excessive aft cyclic control, causing the main rotor blades to flap and strike the tail boom.
