Kamov Ka-26 crash near 1.8 km from Șiclău, Romania

unknown2018-04-13
Summary

On a short repositioning flight from a farm at Grăniceri to Șiclău, the pilot felt a strong vibration and saw the oil indication light for the number 1 engine. The engine ran intermittently for a few seconds and stopped. The helicopter descended on one engine over farmland soaked by recent rain, touched down on its right rear leg, bounced, and sank its front wheels in mud; the left front leg failed, the aircraft pivoted right, the lower rotor blades struck the ground and it rolled onto its right side. The engine stopped because a connecting rod broke and blocked the main shaft, following poor lubrication of the rod's locking bolt and the use of a silicone sealant other than the one specified for the overhaul.
