Incident report
Robinson R66 crash near Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom
fatal2025-06-111 fatality
Summary
A Robinson R66 helicopter (G-WBRN) on a VFR flight from Denham Airfield encountered low cloud shortly after departure. The pilot was not qualified for instrument flying and unintentionally entered IMC at around 700ft. With thickening cloud and controlled airspace above, the pilot decided to return to Denham. The helicopter broke cloud over fields and the pilot made a heavy precautionary landing, causing the helicopter to roll onto its side. The pilot was uninjured but the helicopter was significantly damaged. A 70cm section of rotor blade tip was propelled nearly 180m, crossing a main road, narrowly missing a petrol station canopy, and embedding itself in the wall of a nearby house.
