Summary
The Bo 105 was flying from the research vessel Polarstern to the Neumayer III ice station when it contacted terrain in level flight at low altitude and crashed. White-out conditions prevailed. The BFU concluded the accident was due to unintentional ground contact during flight at low altitude and high forward speed, with the contrastless ice shelf surface and the white-out phenomenon as contributing factors. Two of the five aboard were killed.
