Robinson R44 crash near 7 miles off La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain

fatal2021-05-071 fatality
Summary

The R44 took off from a private estate at Estepona without a flight plan and suffered an engine failure over the Mediterranean, falling into the sea. One occupant was rescued after six hours in the water; the pilot, who owned the helicopter, was never found. The survivor told investigators he was a former Cuban military pilot who had advertised his services as an instructor and had met the owner that way, though he had never in fact instructed him. The owner had trained with another instructor for some months and arranged the flight to demonstrate his progress. The aircraft was destroyed. The investigation could not determine the cause. Final report A-013/2021.
