Boeing CH-47C Chinook crash near Marambio Base, Antarctica

Summary
The Chinook was on a routine operation at Marambio Base, on final approach at around 180 metres, when a sudden failure of the aft transmission gearbox produced uncontrollable vibration. The helicopter fell and was destroyed. Both crew survived. The airframe had accumulated only 558 flying hours.
