fatal2012-06-0614 fatalities
Summary

A Sikorsky S-58ET helicopter operated by HeliCusco crashed into Mount Mamarosa in the Andes at approximately 4,900m (16,000ft) altitude while flying from Mazuco in the Madre de Dios region to Cusco. All 14 on board were killed: eight South Korean engineers conducting aerial surveillance for a hydroelectric project, a Czech, a Swede, a Dutch citizen, a Peruvian passenger, and two Peruvian crew members. The helicopter lost contact near the snowcapped Apu Colque Cruz peak. The wreckage was found two days later after poor weather hampered search efforts. The aircraft, built in 1963 and originally delivered to the German Army, had crashed into the mountainside and exploded. The mountainous region was regularly covered by cloud.
