Bell 212 crash near Rashid Field, Persian Gulf, United Arab Emirates

During a night take-off from the Maersk Resilient drilling rig, bound for the Noble Mark Burns rig, the helicopter travelled backwards at about 22 metres for roughly 50 metres, contacted the vertical crane of the rig, lost altitude and crashed onto the jack-up. It broke up, part falling into the sea and part catching fire. All seven aboard were killed. The GCAA determined the most probable cause was loss of situational awareness through loss of visual reference and an inability to determine the correct attitude of the helicopter and react to it.
