Sikorsky S-61N crash near Den Helder, Netherlands

Summary

A Schreiner Northsea Helicopters Sikorsky S-61N (PH-NZG) touched the water of the Waddenzee during an ILS approach in IMC to Den Helder airport. Airspeed had reduced to 20 knots and an unnoticed descent developed. The commander applied full collective, bouncing the helicopter out of the water, and continued to land safely. The gearbox was over-torqued and had to be replaced. No injuries among 15 on board.
