Bell 206B crash near Harnosand, Sweden

serious2022-06-26
Summary

A Bell 206B-3 JetRanger III (SE-JER, manufactured 1978) operated by Scandinavian Osterberg Helicopter Center was performing scenic passenger flights near Harnosand, Vasternorrland County. During the second flight, the pilot attempted to land on a cultivated field but experienced wind disturbance and executed a go-around to a nearby residential lot. The alternative site had limited obstruction clearance requiring a steep approach. With low airspeed, high power output, no ground effect, and relative wind from the left, the tail rotor lost effectiveness causing an unexpected right yaw that developed into uncontrolled rotation. The pilot reduced throttle which stopped the rotation but caused the helicopter to descend into trees and impact the ground heavily. All five occupants escaped without serious injuries but the helicopter sustained significant damage. The SHK found the pilot had insufficient knowledge about the risk of unexpected yaw and the chosen landing site was too difficult.
