Bell 212 crash near Umm Al Quwain, United Arab Emirates

Summary

An AeroGulf Services Bell 212 (A6-ALD) crashed into the sea approximately 15nm off the coast of Umm Al Quwain at 20:07 local time during a night offshore helideck currency training flight. The helicopter had departed Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai with two pilots: an Egyptian commander (9,011 hours) and a South African co-pilot (7,031 hours). The intent was to complete 5 night landings on the ARAS driller jack-up rig. Both pilots were killed. One body was recovered the next day, the second two days later. Wreckage was scattered across two locations approximately 100m apart. The helicopter was not equipped with an FDR or CVR, nor was it required to be. The GCAA AAIS investigation is ongoing.
