Sikorsky SH-34J Seabat crash near 7 miles east of Keflavík, Southern Peninsula, Iceland

Summary

The US Navy SH-34J was returning to Naval Air Station Keflavik from Hvalfjordur, about eighty-five miles to the northeast, when it crashed and burned seven miles east of the station. All five aboard were killed, among them the Naval Station's commanding officer, the commanding officer of the Marine Barracks, the station's Special Services officer, the pilot, and the aircraft's plane captain. There were no other passengers.
