Incident report
Bell 230 crash near near Kromvlei, south of Alberton, Gauteng, South Africa
minor2026-02-03
Summary
On the second training sortie of the day the instructor demonstrated a Category A simulated single engine failure at about 200 ft above ground level, then handed over to the pilot. At about 45 knots the pilot flared, but the helicopter kept descending and span to the right. The instructor applied left pedal and power without effect. The helicopter struck the ground hard on its landing gear, bounced, rolled left, and the main rotor blades hit the ground. Neither pilot was injured. The Civil Aviation Authority attributed it to low tail rotor effectiveness during a Category A rearward departure close to the ground, with excessive use of power during the recovery a contributing factor.
