Robinson R44 Ii crash near Neuhausen ob Eck, Germany
A Heli Transair Robinson R44 Raven II (D-HOMI) on a training flight departed Donaueschingen at 11:47 with a student pilot and flight instructor. After VOR navigation exercises above a closed cloud layer at FL65, the helicopter descended rapidly at 1,650ft/min in a manoeuvre resembling an autorotation, possibly attempting to descend through a gap in the clouds. The helicopter crashed into a forest approximately 2.5km south of Neuhausen ob Eck. Both occupants were killed on impact. The wreckage was not found until 3:15 a.m. the following morning as the ELT antenna cable was severed on impact. The BFU investigation focused on the foggy weather conditions, with webcam footage from Neuhausen ob Eck airfield showing dense fog minutes before the crash.
