Bell 407 crash near Boltaña, Huesca, Aragon, Spain

serious2021-07-17
Summary

The pilot was assessing a pond at Sabiñánigo for use as a firefighting water collection point, accompanied by six members of the heliborne brigade from the Boltaña base who had disembarked on arrival. Having circled the pond and tested loading and unloading water, he came in to land and re-embark the brigade. During the manoeuvre the main rotor blades struck the slope, and the tail rotor, vertical stabiliser and left horizontal stabiliser were also damaged. Nobody was hurt. The investigation determined the cause was an error in distance assessment during a landing in a confined area in mountainous terrain. Final report A-033/2021.
