Summary
A Kenya Defence Force Hughes 500MD helicopter crashed and caught fire in Liboi, approximately 20km from the Kenya-Somalia border, at 19:55 local time due to an apparent mechanical malfunction. All five Kenyan soldiers on board were killed. The Kenyan defence ministry denied the aircraft was shot down by Somali militants. The crash occurred during Kenya's military operation against al-Shabaab in southern Somalia.
