Summary
An Aerospatiale AS350B Ecureuil (F-GFED, manufactured 1981) made a precautionary landing on a sand bar between Pate Island and Lamu Island after the gearbox cover opened in flight. The pilot was unable to restart the engine. The helicopter was subsequently submerged and destroyed by the incoming tide. No injuries.
