Bell 212 crash near 5nm from Station Nord, National Park, Greenland

The Bell 212 had dropped passengers 210nm northwest of Station Nord. On the return flight it met reduced visibility in fog and landed about 6nm west of the station. After waiting 24 hours the pilot saw a clearing and judged the weather workable for the short remaining leg. Shortly after passing a reference point that proved closer than expected, he lost all visual references. He attempted a turn, but the left skid struck a snow bank at around 40 knots, rolling the helicopter onto its right side. The pilot was uninjured and contacted Station Nord by satellite phone; he was recovered by snowmobile about six hours later.
