Eurocopter AS350B3e crash near Lake Logipi, Kenya

A Tropic Air Kenya Eurocopter AS350B3e (5Y-CCP, manufactured 2012, 4,432 hours) crashed into Lake Logipi during a scenic charter flight. While manoeuvring at low altitude to allow passengers to observe landmarks, the helicopter impacted the glassy water surface. All six survived, one with serious injuries. The investigation found the pilot failed to maintain adequate height clearance, with the mirror-smooth surface eliminating vital visual depth perception cues. The company lacked SOPs for flights below 200ft over water. This was the second helicopter to crash into Lake Logipi — a Lady Lori EC130B4 struck the same lake in 2010.
