Bell 505 crash near Lake Turkana, Kericho, Kenya

A KIDL Helicopter Operations Bell 505 (5Y-KDL), the first Bell 505 in Kenya, crashed at Central Island National Park in Lake Turkana shortly after an 8:35 p.m. nighttime takeoff heading to Lobolo Camp. All five on board were killed: pilot Captain Mario Magonga (who had previously flown for Deputy President William Ruto) and four American tourists: Anders Asher Jesiah, Kyle Forti, Brandon Howe Stapper, and a fourth US citizen. A second KIDL helicopter departed at the same time and landed safely. The wreckage was located at 3:20 a.m. with no survivors. It was the first fatal crash of a Bell 505 worldwide. The investigation found the cause was pilot spatial disorientation in dark night conditions leading to loss of control and CFIT. The pilot was not in conformance with necessary flight experience requirements for the aircraft type and had not conducted a comprehensive pre-flight evaluation.
