Summary

A Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV (5Y-KWF, manufactured 1993) began yawing uncontrollably at 20 feet AGL during approach to Shamata in the Aberdares in a strong crosswind. The helicopter rotated through several revolutions, struck the ground, and rolled onto its left side. The pilot and five passengers including Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph escaped with minor injuries. The investigation found no technical fault but evidence of loss of tail rotor effectiveness (LTE).
